The city is named after the prehistoric city of “Pilini” mentioned in Homer’s Iliad among the Aetolian cities that took part in the Trojan War under the commands of the Aetolian King Thoas. Evinos River lies in the west and separates Pilini from the municipality of Thermo and the region of Trichonis. The landscape alternates between mountains and flat terrains; picturesque canyons formed by the rivers (Evinos, Kotsalos, Poriaris).
